If you are a veteran of an allied country, you must provide the equivalent documents from that country to a Form DD-214 showing a discharge that is under conditions other than dishonorable, the dates of active-duty service and, if the original documents are not in English, an English translation of such documents.

The term “allied veteran” means an individual who served in the armed forces of an ally of the United States during active military combat in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, or the Global War on Terrorism and who is discharged or separated under conditions other than dishonorable.

Upon the death of the veteran, the surviving spouse may request/retain the tag provided they do not remarry. To request/retain the tag, a certified copy of the veteran death certificate, documents equivalent Form DD-214 and Marriage License is required.
